Electric Vehicles Get Toll-Free Access on Atal Setu in Mumbai
Maharashtra has rolled out a major relief for electric vehicle (EV) owners by exempting them from paying toll charges on Atal Setu, the country’s longest sea bridge. The decision, effective August 22, 2025, aims to promote clean mobility in line with the Maharashtra Electric Vehicle Policy 2025.
What the Toll Exemption Means
From now on, electric four-wheelers and electric buses—whether operated by the state transport corporation or privately owned—will enjoy zero toll charges on Atal Setu.
The waiver applies at Shivaji Nagar and Gavan toll plazas, easing the daily commute for thousands of EV owners.
Legal Basis of the Decision
The exemption has been implemented under the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Tax Act, 1958.
A fresh notification issued by the Urban Development Department (No. MRD-3325/C.R.123/UD-7) revised an earlier order from January 2025, which had mandated tolls for all vehicles on the bridge and its approach roads.

This is not just a standalone measure. The Maharashtra government has extended 100% toll exemption for EVs on three key corridors:

- Mumbai–Pune Expressway
- Samruddhi Mahamarg
According to State Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar, the initiative is part of a “Sustainable Transport Corridor” plan, designed to accelerate the state’s shift towards eco-friendly vehicles. A statewide toll waiver for EVs is also under review.
